Let’s get right to it! The beauty of a SUP is you really can paddle anywhere your skills will take you. That said, there are a few key features that make this list special. Whether it’s easy parking, nearby amenities, great surf or no surf, or just a magical spot with dream-like coastlines, frequented by dolphins or whales or any combination of the above that makes being a paddler in this area so amazing!

Everything below has something to offer stand-up paddle boarders and there are two “hidden gems” that any paddler living or visiting LA will appreciate.

Best Flat Water Spots: Marinas

Marina del Rey is a haven for flat water paddling enthusiasts and the go-to paddle spot for 24-hour paddlers, and when the wind or waves are too big in the ocean. Its expansive, serene marina waters are perfect for beginners to find their balance, a peaceful excursion with sea lions, or for experienced paddlers to train and get that unbeatable SUP water workout. The Hidden Gem launch spot is at Mother’s beach where there is plenty of parking and an easily accessable beach launch. This little lagoon is protected on three sides, secluded form the boat traffic, and stays calm in most conditions. It’s small so you’ll want to move on but this is a great place to get your sea legs. Local tip: There will be sting rays here in the Summer and early Fall. No need to worry, though. Just do the stoing ray shuffle and you’ll be fine.

From this palm tree-lined lagoon you can paddle two miles to Santa Monica Bay and see beautiful boats, sea lions, sea turtles, dolphins, and sometimes even a whale!

There are plenty of restaurants and the proximity to the Venice Canals and Venice Pier make this the primary paddle spot for Los Angeles.

2. Redondo King Harbor

Insider Tip: This is one of Laird Hamilton’s favorite spots and while paddlers who want to see Hollywood star homes from the water could get lucky and see the legend himself pulling off helicopters (a SUP surf maneuver) at this point.

The point gets a lot of action but there are some fun times to be had a bit south on the shoulder. It’s a rocky launch but once you’re out, the clear water and fun sets are worth it.
