The Santa Monica Bay at sunset is one of the most breathtaking sights in all of Southern California — and on Wednesday, August 19th from 5pm to 8pm, you can experience it from the deck of a 40-foot sailing catamaran with a professional captain at your side. This is our first-ever open group Discover Sunset Sailing session, and there are only 4 spots remaining.

What Is the Discover Sunset Sailing Experience?
Our Discover Sunset Sailing is a 3-hour guided sailing experience aboard a magnificent 40-foot ocean-going catamaran. You’ll be skippered by an OUPV-licensed captain who brings decades of open-water experience and years of teaching sailing for the American Sailing Academy. This isn’t a sightseeing cruise where you sit back and watch — this is a hands-on introduction to the art of sailing.
During the voyage, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Take the helm — get behind the wheel and steer a 40-foot sailing yacht
- Hoist a sail — feel the power of the wind fill the canvas above you
- Learn basic seamanship — knots, points of sail, reading the wind, and more
- Scan for dolphins and wildlife — Santa Monica Bay is alive with marine life
- Watch the sun set over the Pacific — from the best seat in the house
One of the best things about sailing a catamaran? It’s remarkably stable. Unlike a monohull sailboat that heels (tilts) in the wind, a catamaran sits level on the water — so you can walk around, relax, and fully enjoy the experience without feeling like you’re about to tip over. It’s the most comfortable way to discover sailing.
Why August 19th Is Extra Special
This is our first open group Discover Sunset Sailing session. Up until now, this experience has only been available as a private charter. We’re opening it up to a small group of like-minded adventurers who want to share the magic of a Santa Monica Bay sunset from the water — and meet some wonderful people in the process.
August evenings on the bay are exceptional. The afternoon sea breeze typically softens as the sun descends, the water takes on that gorgeous liquid-gold shimmer, and the entire coastline — from Malibu to Palos Verdes — glows in a way that simply has to be experienced to be believed.

Do I need sailing experience to join the Discover Sunset Sailing?
Not at all! This experience is designed specifically for people who are new to sailing. Our OUPV-licensed captain will walk you through everything — from hoisting the sail to taking the helm — in a relaxed, encouraging environment. All you need is curiosity and a love of the ocean.
What makes a catamaran different from a regular sailboat?
A catamaran has two hulls instead of one, which makes it significantly more stable on the water. Unlike a monohull sailboat that leans (heels) as it catches wind, a catamaran stays level — so you can walk around comfortably, enjoy the views, and focus on the experience rather than your sea legs.
Where does the sailing experience depart from?

What should I bring or wear?
Dress in comfortable layers — evenings on the water can be cooler than on land, even in August. Bring a light jacket, wear soft-soled shoes, and consider sunglasses and sunscreen for the early part of the cruise. Tim is happy to give you a full rundown when you book.
